Revitalizing Hawaii’s Aging Structures with Innovative Solutions

Hawaii’s beautiful climate, while inviting, can also be harsh on our buildings—particularly the many aging condominiums and structures in areas like Waikiki, where numerous properties are nearing the end of their land leases. These buildings are increasingly in need of repair and maintenance work, and architects play a crucial role in guiding this process. At InForm Design, we specialize in revitalizing these aging structures through our extensive repair and maintenance expertise.

One notable example is our work at the Kamehameha Schools – Maui Campus, where we undertook the reroofing of seven elementary school buildings. The original clay roof tiles had begun to crack over time, leading to inevitable leaks. In response, we replaced the traditional clay tiles with modern, durable, mechanically seamed, metal roofing panels.

In addition to the enhanced durability, these metal roofing panels offer an innovative feature—they are designed to support photovoltaic panels through a clip-on attachment system. This eliminates the need for drilling, preserving the integrity of the roof and the related warranty while making it easier to incorporate solar energy in the future.

With a growing number of aging buildings, particularly in high-density areas like Waikiki, architects play a vital role in breathing new life into these structures. At InForm Design, we pride ourselves on offering practical, forward-thinking solutions. Whether we are upgrading a school’s roofing system or restoring a condominium nearing the end of its land lease, we bring both experience and creativity to every project.

If your building is in need of a refresh, we are ready to assist. Let’s work together to make it happen.
