Designing for Change: How Maui EVs is Leading Hawai‘i Toward a Greener Future

Electric vehicles are on the rise, and on Maui, one company is setting the pace. Maui EVs was founded by longtime Tesla owners who recognized the need for sustainable transportation options, especially in a market underserved by traditional rental car companies. Rather than wait for change, they created it.

From the start, Maui EVs set out to make EV driving more accessible for everyone. Their growing fleet gives visitors a cleaner, quieter way to explore the island while helping reduce reliance on imported fuel. But they didn’t stop at rentals.

This year, Maui EVs launched Maui’s first Tesla Supercharger station in central Kahului. Designed in partnership with InForm Design, the project marked a major milestone for the island’s EV ecosystem. The addition of fast, reliable charging addresses the biggest hesitation customers have when considering EV rentals: range confidence.

The journey wasn’t simple. As a first-time property developer, founder Tom had to build trust with Tesla and navigate complex infrastructure work. With support from Hawaiian Electric and InForm Design’s engineering team, the vision became a reality. The result: a charging hub that has drawn enthusiastic praise from the community and quickly become a beacon for EV drivers across Maui.

Now, Maui EVs is looking toward its next chapter. Just steps from the Supercharger, a new rental facility and community hub is on the horizon. Designed to reflect Maui’s unique sense of place, the center will serve as both business headquarters and gathering space, offering EV charging, WiFi, refreshments and educational resources for residents and visitors alike.

And the innovation continues. Maui EVs has expanded beyond Tesla to add Hyundai and Nissan models to its fleet, with plans underway to launch Maui Luxe Transportation, a luxury electric airport shuttle service that gives travelers even more sustainable mobility options.

At every step, Maui EVs is proving what’s possible when design, vision, and sustainability align. As the nation celebrates National Drive Electric Month, Sept. 12–Oct. 12, 2025, Maui EVs stands out as a shining example of how local leadership and thoughtful design can drive Hawai‘i toward a cleaner, greener future.

InForm Design is proud to support their journey and excited to help shape what comes next.
